The Prince and the Pauper – A Tale of two Gears

Gears in Motion

Ever looked at your robot and thought, ‘I wish it was just a little faster… or maybe a lot stronger?’
The secret isn’t always a bigger motor, sometimes, it’s the right set of gears.
Gears can be your robot’s best costume change, turning a speedy sprinter into a heavy lifter, or a powerhouse into a lightning bolt.
We’re breaking down gears the STEAMDivas way with stories, analogies, and tips you’ll never forget.

As told by RobotDiva

Why Gears Matters for Your Robot Builds

In robotics, motors are like the heart, and gears are the muscles and joints that decide how that heart’s energy is used.

  • Need to climb a hill or lift an arm? Go for more torque.

  • Need to spin wheels fast or power a fan? Go for more speed.

By experimenting with gear ratios, you can make the same motor perform entirely different tasks.

Gear Ratio Cheat Sheet

Driving Gear Size Driven Gear Size Effect on Speed Effect on Torque Direction Change
Small Large ↓ Decreases ↑ Increases Reverses
Large Small ↑ Increases ↓ Decreases Reverses

Extra tip: Each additional gear in the train reverses rotation again.

Once Upon a Time in Mechavoltia

In the electric land of Mechavoltia, where gears whir and motors hum, there lived two identical twin motors who were separated at birth.
One motor grew up in Swiftville, a place where speed was king. He became Prince RPM, famous for spinning so fast he could make the wind dance.
The other lived in TorqueTown, where strength ruled. He became Pauper Torque, known for lifting heavy loads with ease, though he was never quick.
Even though they had the same voltage, same build, and same inner workings, their lives couldn’t have been more different.

The GearTown Encounter: When Speed Meets Strength

One day, the twins met in GearTown, GearTown is a bustling hub where gears of every size came together.
They were shocked.
“You’re just like me!”
“But… you move so differently!”
As they talked, they hatched a wild plan, “What if we switch lives?” asked Prince RPM.
“I’d never keep up in Swiftville,” Pauper Torque worried.
“Not if we use… a disguise,” said Prince RPM with a grin.

What Are Gear Ratios? (The “Disguises” of Robotics)

In GearTown, motors could change their performance using gears.

  • Small driving gear → big driven gear
    • Slows down rotation

    • Increases torque (strength)

  • Big driving gear → small driven gear

    • Speeds up rotation

    • Decreases torque (strength)

Prince RPM chose the first option to gain strength.
Pauper Torque chose the second to gain speed.

Key Point: Changing gears doesn’t change the motor’s core specs, it changes how the output shaft behaves.

Living Each Other’s Lives

With his new gear setup, Prince RPM could now push crates, climb hills, and work alongside the strongest bots in TorqueTown.
“Wow! With more torque, I can finally move heavy things!”
Meanwhile, Pauper Torque sped through Swiftville, racing drones and dancing with other robots.
“This is amazing! I’m flying through tasks I used to be too slow for!”
But eventually, they both missed home.

Choosing the Right Gear for the Job

Back in GearTown, they removed their “disguises” and returned to their normal selves but with a new understanding.
“I wasn’t broken… I just needed the right gear for the job.” they thought.
This is true for every builder:
Whether you need more speed or more torque, the right gear ratio makes all the difference.

Why This Matters in Robotics

Gears are the hidden heroes of the motion subsystem, the ultimate costume shop for your motor. They don’t change the motors, they let it perform in a whole new role. They are the tools that allow us to precisely control the speed and torque of our motors.

Think of it as motors providing the energy, and gears deciding how that energy is used from speed, strength, or in a whole new direction.

In our projects, gears open the door to even greater creativity:

  • Lily~Bot Dancing doesn’t use gears yet, but by adding them, we could unlock new dance moves, smoother spins, or even choreographed strength routines. Gears give us room to take Lily~Bot to the next level.

  • For the Bathroom Buddy build, gears could help refine motor output so the bot follows lines more steadily, balances speed with control, and adapts to trickier environments.

By learning gear ratios now, you’ll be ready to expand and enhance your robots with more speed, or more torque, or a brand-new way to move.

Choose your disguise wisely, and your bot will thank you.
