As an avid Olympic watcher, especially in track and field, I’ve always been fascinated by the sheer determination and grit that athletes display. My youthful dreams of being a track star might have fallen short of Olympic gold, 😁 but my admiration for what I like to call the “Olympic Mindset” has only grown stronger.
Often, many misinterpret this mindset as arrogance. They hear Olympians confidently state they are the best, and they bristle. But what many fail to understand is that this isn’t arrogance, it’s a prerequisite for success at such levels. The golden rule is: before you can win a gold medal, you must first see yourself doing it.
This vision isn’t just hopeful wishing, it’s a firm belief in one’s own capabilities, cultivated through relentless practice and overcoming adversities. Remember, these are individuals with a history of winning, overcoming adversities, and defying the odds. Whether they say it aloud or not, every Olympian believes they’re going to win. No gold medalist steps onto the field hoping for victory; they know they’ve already won.
This mindset isn’t exclusive to Olympians. It closely relates to what I call the “Gladiator’s Mindset” – those who emerge from the trenches, shattering glass ceilings and overcoming roadblocks. As a woman in STEM, I’ve embodied this gladiator spirit, breaking through countless barriers and defying the odds stacked against me. From societal expectations to professional roadblocks, each challenge required a fierce belief in my internal truth, rather than the external voices that told me I didn’t belong.
The gladiator mindset, like its Olympic counterpart, is often misunderstood by those who haven’t had to fight as hard to carve out a space for themselves. When athletes like Noah Lyles, Sha’Carri Richardson, or LeBron James express confidence in their abilities, or Simone Biles calling herelf the GOAT, they are sometimes labeled as arrogant. However, this critique often reveals more about the critic’s privilege and less about the athlete’s attitude. It reveals a disconnect from the struggles many face to reach the same level.
At STEAMDivas, we nurture this spirit of confidence and resilience. We make our teachings accessible, provide hands-on experiences, and encourage creativity. Confidence is the key ingredient for women in STEM. Holding ourselves back does a disservice to ourselves and denies permission for others to shine.
Women are the future. I firmly believe that with the right spark, any young girl, even those initially uninterested in STEM, can become a leader, innovator, and creator. My vision is to cultivate a generation of women who seamlessly blend the worlds of ARTS and STEM, (STEAM), merging their artistic talents with scientific inquiry using their unique perspectives to recreate the world that we live in. It is through blending the strengths of STEM and the Arts that we can create a generation capable of redefining technology and culture alike.
It is time for us all to start embracing the Olympic and Gladiator mindsets. Why dim your light when you can shine brightly?
As Lil Jon says, “Turn it down for what!!!!”
